Warming herbs

When it’s cold outside, there’s nothing like a warming winter tea to warm you up with key herbs that are able to boost circulation. My top favourite herbs are ginger, turmeric and cinnamon. Not only are they are warming for the body, but they also contain multiple properties that enhance wellness.

Ginger is a remarkable herb. It’s known as ‘the garlic of the far East’ and can help to reduce the growth of certain bacteria and viruses in the GI tract. Furthermore, in traditional Chinese medicine, ginger helps to stabilise the kidneys and bladder organs (which are activated during winter), enhance circulation and aid digestion. Ginger is also good for overly ‘damp’ conditions and can to help clear excess mucous from the body.

Turmeric is prized for it’s curcumin content (the main therapeutic properties of the plant). This incredible herb has been highly valued in India for centuries where it is considered to be a household staple. It’s associated with longevity in ayurvedic medicine and is worth considering if you wish to slow down the ageing process. Turmeric also helps in enhancing recovery after exercise and can aid in the management of inflammatory conditions.

Last, but not least, is cinnamon. This incredible herb has been used traditionally in both ayurvedic and Chinese medicine for centuries. Studies have shown that regular intake has multiple health benefits including: enhancing gastrointestinal function, decreasing heart burn and stabilising blood sugar levels. Plus, it adds a delicious hint of spiciness to any food or drink.

Warming Winter Tea Recipe:

Place into a small pan of approximately 1/2 litre water:

1) Large piece of grated ginger (a thumbs length)

2) Large piece of grated turmeric

3) 2 sticks of ceylon cinnamon

Let the mixture simmer for approximately 12- 15 mins to release the beneficial compounds, and for enhanced flavour. If desired, after the cooking process, add in a slice of lemon or lime for addition flavour. But, please note, in order to ensure your immune system is enhanced, rather than compromised, then it’s best to leave the honey and sugar out of the mix as sugar can suppresss your immune system function for up to 8 hours!

I hope you enjoy this warming tea as much as I do.
